The year was 1996. On some level, I was struggling daily and felt pretty defeated by life. I was in a marriage that had been “challenging” for most of its 25 years. I had recently quit a job that had become stress-filled beyond my ability to cope. I was exhausted and had just been diagnosed with clinical depression. Spiritually, although I had been a Christian for over 25 years, I was very confused about my relationship with God. In my skewed thinking, I could not understand why He had allowed everything to go wrong in my life.
I had previously attended a Grace Life Conference, and that year I attended GLI’s Advanced Discipleship Training (ADT). I still don’t quite have the words to describe what God did in my life during ADT. Yes, I learned a lot…about Who God is, about who He says I am, about forgiveness, and about how to overcome unhealthy patterns of living. Additionally, classes included a verse by verse study of Romans 5-8, and much, much more. But, what seemed to set these classes apart from other in depth Bible studies I had taken is that, during the training, I began to experience the very truths I was being taught. One woman who has been through ADT for women, Women of Grace (WoG), said it this way. “I cringe, referring to ADT as ‘training’, when the Spirit tells me something quite different . . . (it is) a faith awakening and abiding in Him!”
At that time, one BIG take-away for me caused a major shift in the way I live. I went from living life “with God’s help” to the revelation that Jesus lives IN me, and I can allow Him to live through me. (Think of the Vine and the branch Jesus describes in John 15.) “Concept of God” is another teaching that impacts many people. This was one woman’s response: “I want to say thank you and thank you 🙂 this information is transformational!! … I have not been this excited since I was saved :-))”
Fast forward to my life today, over 20 years after my ADT experience. Many circumstances have changed over the years. Happily ever after? No, I can’t exactly say that, but I do have a contentment and peace that passes all understanding most of the time. The best change, directly attributable to ADT, has to do with my relationship with God. It is more real and more intimate than I ever could have thought or imagined
