At GLI, we are convinced from Scripture and the thousands of people we’ve ministered to, that almost every person has a main lie about God which can cause great fear if left undiscovered.
There is usually more than one, but make no mistake about it, there is a granddaddy of them all. This big whopper is one that Satan has often been whispering in our mind since we were a child. At every turn, especially difficult ones, he whispers it again, interpreting that relationship or situation through the deceptive language of that lie. Yet, because he’s also a deceiver, most people don’t even know it’s been there, producing fear-based living as we attempt to stay in control of our everyday lives.
If you’re wondering where this is in the Bible, it starts in Genesis 3:4-5 when he responds to Eve, who tells him they are not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. In fact, he tells her that God is a liar, holding back on her and Adam and that He can’t be trusted. You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 states this another way when it says. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Our main lie about God is described here as a stronghold, an argument or a pretense about who God is. This explanation spells out for us that any lie about God keeps us in bondage.
The good news is we don’t have to stay stuck there because we have weapons that carry divine power to smash and replace every lie about who God really is. Do you know what that main weapon is? God’s truth that He has revealed to us in His Son Jesus Christ!
When you understand your main lie about God and His counteracting truth, so much confusion about your relationship with Him will be replaced with a liberating and healing peace.
My main lie about God that has caused me so much anxiety and stress has been, “God will not come through when it really counts.” When He made this clear to me and I asked Him what the truth was to overcome this, His answer was all through the Bible. “I am faithful Mark. I have been faithful throughout your life and will be faithful.” Yet, even today, I have to choose to believe the truth about Him because I am sometimes tempted to believe my lie about God.
