I remember the first time I ever heard the teaching which came to be known as “Name It and Claim It”. It sounded so appealing. The idea was that when you look at the Old and New Testaments, there were Scriptures that promised divine health and wealth to everyone of God’s children. The one condition was faith. As long as you believed and didn’t waver, God would make sure the blessings of abundant finances and complete health would be yours. I tried it for a long while and finally gave up, concluding I didn’t have enough faith.
I’ve found that my story was common. Here’s one of many. A few years ago, good friends of mine, Gerald and Donita, who were also supporters, received a devastating report from their doctor that he, Gerald, had stage 4 cancer. He received the best treatment available. They also asked God in faith to heal him according to Scripture.
A year later, I heard Gerald had died. I called Donita and she shared with me an enlightening story. “Mark, I never wavered in my faith in God’s Word that Gerald would be healed. In fact, when he died in the hospital, I believed so completely I stood over him confident God was going to raise him from the dead. But that didn’t happen.” In Donita’s case, she didn’t turn away from Jesus but had to admit she must have misunderstood Scripture. Others I know in her situation have turned away from Him in anger.
Don’t get me wrong, God still heals some people physically. I’ve seen it. He also provides for His children financially. My wife and I have experienced it since I live by faith as a missionary. We are to believe God’s promises even if we don’t see their fulfillment according to our expectation. The New Covenant is all about living by faith. Hebrews 11:6 says, Without faith it is impossible to please God.
There is a “Name it and Claim it” that is always true. This brings with it mental and emotional healing, freedom from habitual sin, and the defeat of Satan. Here’s what I’m writing about.
Our Father wants all His children to name the lies they believe, especially about themselves, and claim the truth about their astounding identity in Christ. Here are some examples.
Name the Lie Claim the Truth
I am a greedy person. I am a giver in Christ. 2 Cor. 9:7
I am impatient. I am patient in Christ. Gal. 5:22
I am a screw up. I am perfect in Christ. Hebrews 10:14
Here’s what I encourage you to do. Take a moment right now to ask the Holy Spirit what the top three lies are that you believe about yourself. Then claim the Biblical truth about who you are in Christ. Write these three truths down and pray them daily for a week. You may very well begin to experience the health and wealth of your identity in Christ. Here’s a link to a resource you might want to use to help you. Just go to Resources and look for the Name the Lie and Claim the Truth download.
