Before I understood the life-giving “grace message”, I operated from the life-taking “law mentality”. My mindset was that transformation is a result of memorizing Scriptures, praying lengthy prayers, weekly fasting, and sharing the gospel with everything that moves and doesn’t move. While those are some great things when done from a posture of grace, the reality is that this misguided “try harder Christianity” did not transform me but rather deformed me spiritually, emotionally, and relationally.
I once thought that all of the activities above would produce what Romans 12:2a says. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” What I did not realize is that if a person does not know and understand the “grace message”, that person will view all of those as ways to get more of God’s love, blessings, and acceptance, based on their sure sincerity and determined discipline.
A renewed mind is one that God has and is transitioning from a “law mentality” to a “grace mentality”. A “grace mentality” is convinced that anyone in Christ is: forgiven past, present, and future; intimate with and loved by Jesus from within; a growing realization that God’s best is to rely on Jesus to live through us; full of an identity that is in Christ alone. That “law mentality” leads to weariness while this “grace mentality” leads to restfulness.
