Freedom from the Control of Your Fleshly False Identity

Identity is a complex word with many meanings in our culture. However, at its core, it poses a fundamental question: “Am I accepted for who I am, or do I need to change who I am to feel accepted?” We all use our personal experiences and external messages to form our identity.

Have you ever thought about what criteria you use to define yourself? Is it based on success, failure, rejection, family, shame, inner feelings, the news, or cultural messages? Perhaps it would be helpful to ask yourself another question: What is the central core belief you have about yourself?

The identity we believe about ourselves shapes how we function, and we can only choose from two options. One is the false, fleshly identity shaped by what we do and what others think of us. The other is God’s good identity, molded exclusively by what Jesus has done and what our Heavenly Father thinks of us.

Did you know that when Jesus Christ died on the cross, our false, fleshly identity died with Him? The Bible confirms this in Romans 6:6. “For we know that our old self was crucified with him.” (NASB) However, the negative thoughts and beliefs we hold on to must be replaced with God’s transforming truth. This is the process the Holy Spirit uses to free us from our false, fleshly identity as described in Romans 12:2. “Do not be conformed to this age but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” (CSB)

If you’re interested in learning more about your false, fleshly identity versus your transformative true identity, our Freedom Conferences offer great explanations. The next one is coming up this Friday night and Saturday morning. Anyone who is currently being counseled by us at GLI can attend for half off by using the code 50offgli. Please register today here.
