In 1968, God saved a little-known hippie named Lonnie Frisbee. After he moved to Southern California, Jesus worked through him to play a significant role in a national teenage spiritual awakening. Lonnie partnered with Pastor Chuck Smith at Calvary Chapel and later the founders of the Vineyard Churches. Today these churches are dotted all across the country. This is chronicled in the movie, Jesus Revolution, a title taken from a Time Magazine feature on what was termed The Jesus Movement.
Yet, like many Christians then and now, Lonnie had inner pain that plagued him for years. A neighbor had sexually molested him as a child, which left deep hurt, shame, and confusion in his soul. Though God worked through this flawed young man, his unresolved pain from his past eventually caused many failures. As I learned more about his life after the movie, I thought to myself. “I wish a Grace Life International counselor had been available to Lonnie back then. I believe Jesus would have healed his pain and kept him from the consequences of medicating himself in such destructive ways.”
Every week, we counsel nearly 90 people across the USA who reach out to us with their own versions of unresolved pain. It shows itself in their relationship conflicts, their frustration with their Christian lives, their feelings of depression, anxiety, shame, and stress, and their ways of coping with trying to feel loved, accepted, valued, secure, and belonging. After 28 years of counseling them, we can confidently share that Jesus can rewrite their stories, giving them a new brighter future.
