Adults of all ages listened with rapt attention as I taught at my Foundation for Personal Transformation Conference in Virginia. They could hardly believe what they were hearing—it was such great news! In the end, several shared how powerful this Romans 5-8 teaching was for them.
Dan, a middle-aged man, excitedly shared, “Learning I am 100% righteous in Christ all of the time is a game changer.” Linda expressed with streaming tears. “I have given out many handouts on our identity in Christ throughout the years, but I never believed it for myself until this conference.” Sandi was a college student who joyfully told everyone, “My parents are not Christians, but I never shared the gospel with them because it didn’t seem like great news until now. I can’t wait to get home and tell them that Christianity is much better than I’ve known, and here’s why!”
What does the teaching explain to us?
- God exchanged our identity of being sinners in Adam for being righteous in Christ. This is why our Heavenly Father accepts us without condition now. (Romans 5)
- Through our union with Christ, our old sin-loving self died with Christ on the cross and was buried. When he rose, we were raised with him with a new creation self who loves saintly living. (Romans 6)
- Our death with Christ freed us from the impossibility of Law-keeping for salvation. After our salvation, we quickly learn that the Law provides no power for overcoming temptation. Only Jesus in us does. (Romans 7)
- The Holy Spirit in us keeps reminding us that our deepest identity in Christ is that we are a child of God, no longer an orphan. The Holy Spirit also encourages us that He is praying for us during our suffering and that nothing and no one can separate us from God’s love for us. (Romans 8)
