“I hate Facebook!” Jane said in her first counseling session. “You have to present yourself as never having any problems.”
Jane went on to tell me her life was anything but great. She was divorced and her kids were in their thirties but still lived with her. They gave her a lot of trouble, and money was always a problem.
On Facebook, though, Jane was another person. She pretended her life was great. She would always get a lot of “likes” and positive comments. The problem was none of her posts were true!
The rise of social media has given many people the opportunity to connect with old friends and new ones. It can be fun—unless you use it to try to find your stolen identity. Tallying how many “likes” you have on Facebook compared to your other friends is an insidious problem. Also, it’s easy to look for affirmation or adulation in hopes of bolstering your sense of who you are. God forbid what might happen to your identity if you accidentally deleted your account!
Do you enhance your image on social media by posting only pictures, vacation details, or stories that make you look good? Are you envious of others when reading their posts?
I want to help you discover what is holding your false identity together. I call it “the lie” you believe about yourself. You may have picked this lie up as a child, teen, or adult but it’s the wheel upon which your false identity turns.
At a conference where I was teaching, I asked a small group to share a lie they believed about themselves. It was fascinating to hear Satan had whispered different lies to each individual. Here are just a few:
I’m better than everyone else.
I’m one big screwup.
I’m not masculine enough.
I’m a whore.
I’m a success.
I’m a mistake.
I’m the life of the party.
Do you know what lie Satan whispers to you?
If the truth sets us free, then lies keep us in bondage. That’s why it’s essential that you identify what lies could be affecting you. We all believe more than one lie. Over and over I’ve seen people believe other lies, which fan out like spokes on a bicycle wheel, from one core lie.
What you’ve just read comes from God’s Best-Kept Secret:Christianity Is Easier Than You Think. Did you know that your identity was stolen in the Garden of Eden? Did you know the entire human race has been searching for their identity ever since?
Jesus told us in John 10:10 about Satan’s destructive mission statement and His life-giving one. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Satan is the one who has been feeding you lies about your identity. Jesus, on the other hand, has restored our lost identity but many don’t understand it. When we know and embrace our amazing identity in Christ, we realize we are much better than we think!
