Unwanted thoughts are a phenomenon that every person experiences, regardless of age, ethnicity, or geographic location. They are often called “intrusive thoughts,” and these can be very troubling. We often ask ourselves, “Where are those unwanted thoughts coming from?” Let’s dive into that, as there are a few possibilities.
Brain Health – The brain can become unhealthy at any time. When it does, a person can experience depression, anxiety, anger, and more. This can also cause intrusive thoughts. Thank God we live in a time when there is often medical help for this through proper medication. That’s why there are times in counseling when we recommend a person see a physician to discuss the possible need for medication.
Physical Health – Sometimes, our body has other illnesses that can cause intrusive thoughts, such as hormones that are out of balance. This can be especially true for women, but it can affect men too. Personally, when I go for a few days without restorative sleep, my thoughts become very negative.
Persistent Difficult Circumstances – These can cause a person to feel overwhelmed so much that they want relief. Many Christians would not entertain suicidal thoughts, but they might have a death wish and even ask God to take them home. If we get tempted to commit suicide, please understand that it is a temptation from Satan, as we will see next.
Satan – As those who have a holy, righteous identity in Christ, we cannot generate ungodly, sinful thoughts ourselves. However, Satan can insert those thoughts in our minds, and here is what may surprise a lot of people. Because he is a deceiver, those thoughts sound just like us with the tone, cadence, accent, and gender of our own thoughts. Have you ever experienced this when you were praying? Have you ever had thoughts about how inadequate you are or how superior you are? Have you ever had thoughts about harming yourself? These and many others are intrusive thoughts that are different types of temptations. Remember how Satan gave thoughts to Judas to betray Jesus? No wonder the helmet of salvation in Ephesians 6:17 is an essential part of the armor of God to stand against Satan’s schemes.
